Item no. 1
Kokárda Rosette
The Kokárda, a textile rosette in the colours of the Hungarian flag, was originally worn by revolutionaries during the 1848 and 1956 Revolutions. Although both revolutions were ultimately unsuccessful, they are seen as a symbol of Hungarian independence, and the Kokárda has become of the main representations of national identity and pride here in Hungary.
People wear them on their heart on national holidays, and we see them all year round on wreaths left in front of the many monuments that commemorate the city’s history. The block of flats we live in has a commemorative plaque by the front door, so we both see the Kokárda every day.
