Hand-Painted Egg Cup

Item no. 7

Hungarian folk art, beautiful objects created locally by hand, is all around Budapest; hand-embroidered textiles, pottery, wood carvings and elaborate painted furniture.

Márta remembers seeing colourful and intricate designs, based on natural forms like flowers and birds, on the walls of her grandmother’s house, but these days traditional motifs are more likely to pop up at local markets, festivals, or reimagined in modern Hungarian design. Many see these centuries-old arts as a connection to their roots, and folk songs and dances are part of children’s day-to-day schooling.
